Three main types coexist in contemporary tailoring, and the subject is not limited to the contrast between hand-stitched and heat-fused interlining. Understanding these nuances allows you to evaluate a jacket based on more than just its price tag.

Three types of canvas, not two camps

Interlining refers to the invisible structural piece inserted between a jacket’s outer fabric and its lining. Three main construction methods coexist in contemporary tailoring: full hand-piqué, semi-fused—hand-piqué on the bust, light fusible interfacing on the lower body—and full fusible construction. Each is suited to a different purpose and budget.

The interlining is the layer that no one sees and no one mentions in a ready-to-wear store, even though it determines the drape, durability, and comfort of the jacket. Slipped inside the front panel, it ensures the jacket holds its shape across the chest, gives the lapels their rounded shape, and keeps the collar upright, while accommodating the natural curves of the chest dart and armhole. Without it, a jacket would be nothing more than a bag of fabric draped over the shoulders; with it, the garment sculpts the silhouette without constricting it.

Contemporary tailoring is divided into three main categories. Full-hand-piqued construction uses a horsehair and wool interlining from the shoulder to the bottom of the jacket, secured to the fabric by thousands of hand-sewn stitches. The semi-fused construction reserves this interlining for the upper portion—the bust, shoulders, and lapels—and finishes the lower section with a light heat-seal. Finally, the fully fused construction bonds a synthetic interlining to the wrong side of the fabric with a single heated press. Three techniques, three garment designs: none is universally superior to the others; each serves a specific purpose.

Tailor’s Tip: Don’t confuse semi-fused construction with fully fused construction. Semi-fused construction is a genuine construction choice that places hand-stitched interfacing where the jacket is under the most strain—the chest and shoulders—and is suitable for the vast majority of fabrics. At RIVES, this is the preferred construction method for most projects.

Full-Coverage Heat-Seal and Its Limitations

The full-fusion bonding process bonds a synthetic web to the fabric along the entire height of the jacket with a single heated press. This technique allows for mass production at minimal cost, but it stiffens the drape and, over time, eventually forms blisters that are visible under oblique light. This construction method is now used in virtually all entry-level and mid-range ready-to-wear clothing.

Full-fabric fusing originated in the 1960s with the industrialization of suit production. A press heated to several hundred degrees applies a pre-glued interlining to the wrong side of the fabric—a process that takes just a few seconds, whereas hand-stitched interlining requires eight to ten hours of manual labor for the Bib alone. This difference in labor input accounts for most of the price gap between ready-to-wear and tailor-made clothing.

The result is immediately apparent to the touch. The front of a 100% heat-bonded jacket has the stiffness of a cardboard sheet, with no perceptible texture between the layers. The lapel, in particular, folds cleanly instead of curling—a detail that distinguishes an industrially manufactured jacket from a well-constructed one from ten meters away. Over time, the adhesive deteriorates: dry cleaning, sweat, and ill-fitting hangers eventually cause the fabric to peel away in places, forming those characteristic blisters (sometimes called “bubbling” in English-language literature) that dot the chest and cannot be fixed.

Frequently Asked Question: How long does it take for a heat-sealed costume to blister?
Five to ten years, depending on use and care. The first signs often appear after the fourth or fifth trip to the dry cleaner—the heat and solvents break down the adhesive. A jacket worn regularly and cleaned several times a year will almost always show blistering after a decade. Beyond that point, the damage is permanent: there is no way to repair it.

Tailor’s tip: Suits that are 100% fused do not hold up well to frequent dry cleaning. Spacing out dry cleanings, brushing the jacket daily with a natural-bristle brush, and airing it out after each wear will help delay the appearance of pilling—without altering the garment’s quality.

Semi-canvas: The Standard for High-Quality Tailor-Made Products

The semi-fused construction combines hand-quilted canvas on the chest—where the jacket is subjected to the most stress—with a lightweight fused lining on the lower portion, which is subjected to much less stress from movement. This construction offers a solid balance between structure, fit, and durability, and is the method RIVES prefers for the majority of its tailor-made jackets.

The chest and shoulders bear nearly all of the mechanical stress of a jacket: this is where the fabric stretches with every movement, where the lapel takes on its curve, and where the collar aligns with the nape of the neck. Using hand-stitched interlining exclusively in this area, while allowing for discreet heat-sealed interlining at the bottom—which is not subject to any structural stress—is not a compromise: it is a technical decision. The jacket achieves its poise and rounded shape where it needs them, and saves on labor where it would be unnecessary.

This construction is used in nearly nine out of ten jackets produced in the RIVES workshops. It is suitable for the vast majority of contemporary fabrics—fine wools, summer blends, flannels, and dressy cottons—and produces jackets that can be worn daily without needing to be reshaped. There is a difference compared to full-canvas construction, but it is more subtle than full-canvas marketing often suggests. It primarily relates to the fit and is noticeable mainly to very discerning wearers or when made from particularly structured fabrics.

Frequently Asked Question: Is a semi-reinforced tire as durable as a 100% reinforced one?
Yes, in very similar proportions. The chest and shoulders, which bear the brunt of the stress, receive the same level of handwork; the lower part, which isn’t subjected to movement, doesn’t experience the mechanical stress that could damage the heat-sealed seams. A well-made semi-fused jacket will easily last twenty years with proper care.

Full-Hand Quilting: Which Fabrics to Use, What Results to Expect

Full-hand-piqued construction uses a horsehair lining that extends the full height of the jacket. This technique adds extra flexibility and lightness to the jacket, which is particularly noticeable with structured fabrics. However, it is not always the best option: depending on the fabric and the desired look, it can result in a jacket that is too supple, failing to highlight either the fabric or the silhouette.

From a technical standpoint, full-hand stitching represents the most sophisticated form of lining. The horsehair and wool canvas—a stiff weave made of animal fibers, sometimes mixed with camel hair—is secured to the fabric with a series of tiny stitches, known as “basting stitches” in French or “punto di canvas” in Italian. In Neapolitan workshops, the phrase “tre mila punti” —three thousand stitches—is sometimes used to describe the work required for the Bib alone. This density of stitches produces a canvas that is neither loose nor stiff: suspended from the fabric, ready to conform to its movements without restricting them.

The difference is noticeable when worn. A 100%-fused jacket is more supple and lightweight than a semi-fused one: it moves more freely with the body, appears less structured to the eye, and offers slightly better thermal comfort in warm weather. But this suppleness has a downside. On a fabric that already drapes heavily—light flannel, open-weave summer wool—the absence of rigid interlining at the bottom can result in a loose, shapeless drape, causing the jacket to lose its silhouette. Full-hand-stitched construction is ideally suited to moderately structured fabrics (worsted, fresco, certain firm winter tweeds) and results in a supple, almost shirt-like fit. For a formal suit or a dense fabric, a well-constructed semi-fused jacket is often the better choice.

Frequently Asked Question: When should you choose a 100%-stretched canvas over a semi-stretched one?
Best suited for medium-weight to structured fabrics, for a supple and natural fit, and for customers seeking a level of comfort similar to that of a dress shirt. Semi-fused construction is preferable for highly draped fabrics, for more formal suits, and when a distinct visual structure is desired. Both construction methods are sound technical choices, to be decided on a project-by-project basis.

Tailor’s tip: To assess a fully hand-stitched jacket, observe the bust area as you raise and then lower your right hand: a properly interlined jacket immediately regains its shape, with no residual creases at the shoulder or lapel. The same observation applies to a high-quality semi-fused jacket; the difference lies in the degree of flexibility, not in how quickly it regains its shape.

The inner lining: what’s never listed on the label

Beyond the choice between 100% fused, semi-fused, or heat-sealed, the quality of the internal construction—all the materials between the fabric and the lining—has just as much of an impact on the drape and durability. A 100% fused jacket with poor-quality interlining may turn out to be inferior to a well-made semi-fused jacket.

The internal lining refers to all the invisible elements that the customer has no direct way of assessing: the canvas itself (made of animal hair or a synthetic substitute), the Bib—the piece that gives structure to the front— the collar lining, which keeps the nape of the neck aligned, the shoulder reinforcements, the collar break tape, and sometimes a thin layer of wool to regulate thermal comfort. The nature of each of these elements—whether natural or synthetic fiber, density, and thickness—silently shapes the final quality of the garment.

A brand may advertise a “100% fused” jacket while using a lightweight synthetic canvas, a weightless Bib, and a subpar collar fabric. The result is statistically disappointing: the jacket lacks structure, the collar sags, and the front doesn’t hold its shape. Conversely, a semi-fused jacket constructed with genuine horsehair interlining, a weighted Bib, and high-quality collar interlining produces a structured, durable, and comfortable jacket—one that is sometimes superior to a 100% fused jacket from a brand that hasn’t invested in its internal materials. The debate over the percentage of interlining, without a parallel discussion of materials, is only half the story.

Tailor’s Tip: Three questions to ask about the inner lining—the type of canvas (animal horsehair or synthetic), whether or not it includes a weighted Bib, and the type of collar canvas. A reputable tailor will provide precise answers, name their suppliers, and agree to show the inner construction while it’s being assembled. A vague response to these three points is more revealing than any sales pitch.

How to Evaluate a Jacket: Three Useful Observations

Three simple observations can help you form an opinion about a jacket before buying it: the chest pinch test, the lapel profile, and how well it regains its shape after movement. None of these provides absolute certainty, but taken together, they help you rule out poorly constructed jackets and ask your tailor the right questions about the ones worth considering.

The pinch test involves grasping the front of the jacket at chest level, about ten centimeters from the lapel break, and gently pinching the fabric between your thumb and index finger. On a jacket with hand-quilted bust panels—whether semi-fused or 100% fused—you can feel three distinct layers: the outer fabric, a slightly stiffer intermediate interlining, and the lining. On a 100% fused jacket, these three layers are fused into a single continuous sheet. The test does not indicate whether the jacket is semi-fused or fully fused; it simply indicates whether it is fused at all.

Next, examining the lapel completes the assessment. Button up the jacket and view it from the side. A hand-stitched lapel forms a gentle curve that flares slightly toward the tip— a “natural roll” on Savile Row, a “belly lapel” in Neapolitan tailors’ workshops. A fused lapel creates a sharp, almost geometric break. This examination—provided it is performed on a jacket that is being worn and buttoned—almost always distinguishes between the two categories. For a broader overview of the signs that distinguish tailor-made from a simple alteration, the article on tailor-made patterns expands on this concept of invisible construction. A house’s signature often lies more in these details than in any others.

Frequently Asked Question: How can you tell if a jacket is semi-fused or 100% fused?
The pinch test—repeated this time halfway down the front, between the pocket and the hem—provides the answer. If you feel three distinct layers at the bottom as well as at the top, the jacket is fully fused. If it feels like a single continuous panel halfway up, it’s partially fused. Neither observation disqualifies the jacket; it simply provides information about its exact construction.

Conclusion: Consistency Rather Than Dogma

The quality of a jacket isn’t determined solely by the percentage of lining. It depends on the harmony between the chosen construction method, the fabric, the customer’s body type, and the quality of the internal materials. A well-designed semi-fused jacket can outperform a poorly made 100% fused jacket; choosing a construction method suited to the project is more important than chasing after the supposedly most prestigious option.

It’s tempting to reduce the assessment of a jacket to a simple phrase— “full canvas is better” —and several brands have turned this into a selling point. The reality of the craft is more nuanced. Semi-canvas construction, in its most refined form, is the gold standard for high-quality tailor-made tailoring; it is suitable for virtually all projects, fabrics, and silhouettes. Full hand-stitched construction is a relevant premium option for certain fabrics and certain clients, though it is not an absolute requirement. 100% heat-bonded construction, on the other hand, is excluded from the tailor-made approach as practiced by RIVES, because it compromises too much on durability in order to save production time. This three-part framework—not a simple binary opposition—is what distinguishes a serious workshop from a ready-to-wear sales pitch.

Final tip: Before ordering your next jacket, ask your tailor three questions instead of just one— “What type of construction do you offer, and what materials are used for the lining and the Bib? What fit and what fabric is this construction best suited for? And can I see a jacket being assembled in your workshop?” The precision of the answers says everything about the craft. A tailor who clearly distinguishes between semi-fused and 100% fused construction, who justifies their choice based on the fabric and the final look, and who demonstrates the actual internal construction, cannot be confused with a retailer of premium ready-to-wear.

Our Tailor-Made Jackets

BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

The internal construction of a jacket—the invisible structural layer sandwiched between the outer fabric and the lining—has a name: interlining.
